The process I was taught, and what I use is quite simple. I take the pan and stick it in the woodstove in the coals and let it get nice and hot for about 30 mins to a hour. After that you take it out and let it cool. Once its cool you take a course brush or steel wool and scrub as much as you can off. As for the rust you soak it for a hour or so in 50 50 vinegar/water solution. that dissolves most of the rust and repeat the scrubbing process. after this I wash it well and put it on top of the wood stove to heat it up so all the water evaporates off. give it one last quick scrubbing and wipe it out with a towl or paper towl. After that, just oil it and put it back to let the oil seep into all the little pores in the pan. aftet that, your ready to rock n roll!!!
